We must rethink and retool pedagogical approaches to training students to write about literature to ensure that all students feel engaged and welcomed to openly share their views. This essay explains how data storytelling tremendously elevates our abilities to appreciate and realize the diverse skillsets among various writing communities.

Since digital compositions are centerpieces in courses I teach about Black verbal art, #TheBeyonceExperience privileges student skillsets—such as graphic design, photography, GIF making, and video editing—that are traditionally not utilized or always appreciated in traditional English courses.

Data storytelling encourages students to embrace multiple research methodologies from the humanities and data sciences in order to gain a much-needed appreciation of contemporary technologies as well as social and ethical dilemmas that these tools bring in their wake.
